Established over 21 years ago, by Ceramic Artist Njalikwa Chongwe and his partner Jacqueline Rodrigues, Zinongo Gallery has become a distinctive landmark in South Fremantle, with its 2 metre high mural of  the three dancing women adorning the gallery facade.
The gallery is located in a traditional corner shop, set high on the Beaconsfield Ridge, overlooking the Indian Ocean with views to Rottnest Island.  The gallery hosts a ceramic studio where Njalikwa makes and fires a wide range of low fired Raku and high fired Stoneware ceramic pieces.

Njalikwa draws his creative inspiration from his African and Australian heritage, evident in the ceramic forms he creates and their distinctive patterns.  The Indian Ocean features strongly throughout Njalikwa's work, influencing the form, texture and colour of his ceramic pieces.

The Calabash form is evidence of this fusion of influences. Njalikwa's Calabash form is inspired by the  traditional food and drinking vessel used throughout Africa. The slightly distorted shape also reflecting the sea urchin, shell like form. However, the most delightful thing about the Calabash form is not just it's appearance but how comfortably it fits and locks into the palm of your hand, making it a truly unique and ground breaking piece of ceramic design.
Njalikwa's Raku ware pieces stretch the boundaries of rakuware, achieving brilliant colours and refined forms using a technique that is both difficult to control and master because of the stresses and strains the firing process places on the pieces.
Zinongo Gallery also has a range of unique African artefacts and traditional fabrics.

Zinongo is the ideal place to visit if you are searching for something special, a birthday gift, a special wedding gift or that 'something' for someone who has everything in a world gone plastic. Zinongo Gallery may just have something for you. To purchase a piece browse the online store page to view the pieces that available in the gallery. We have over 100 unique pieces to choose from.
