Raku Ware.

''The beauty of Raku is that it allows me to capture a vibrancy, primitivism that is only achieved when the pots are Raku fired. This unique effect is achieved through the intensity of the firing process,  when the pot reaches a temp. of 1000c, and begins to smoulder when it makes contact with the sawdust in the smoking process."  Njalikwa Chongwe.

Njalikwa's rakuware is distinctive, featuring colourful glazes and unique patterning, achieved through the use of scraffito decoration and his own unique glaze recipes, giving the pieces a  tactile quality. This combination of glaze and decoration technique enables Njalikwa to achieve a sense of depth, this effect is created when intricate designs are contrasted against intensely crackled block glazes. Raku   pieces are low fired to achieve their dramatic results and are therefore porous.
