Calabash ware

The Calabash is a range of stoneware vessels that are a unique and original design by Njalikwa. The design, form and function of this piece is reflected in the traditional Calabash gourd, a  traditional food server and drinking vessel used throughout Africa.  The Calabash form also takes on the influences of the shapes and patterns of the ocean, particularly evident  is the animate characteristics of the sea urchin often found washed up on local Fremantle beaches.
The Calabash form fits comfortably into the curve of the palm, the handle locking easily into shape of the thumb, making the bowl an extension of your hand, a truly unique and ground breaking piece of ceramic design.

''Ngoni warriors would feast on chibuku (beer) and nshima (food), their calabashes held high in the air, overflowing and filling their stomachs for the battle ahead.''

The Calabash is a vessel that demands to be filled with food for a feast to conquer life's battles!
